Moseley Tailpiece with Patent Numbers

Postby Mr. Bill » Tue Jun 16, 2009 9:41 am

There is a Moseley tailpiece on eBay right now from the UK.

http://cgi.ebay.com/60s-MOSRITE-VENTURES-TREMOLO_W0QQitemZ110402273708QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGuitar?hash=item19b47d01ac&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1205%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A0%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

If you look at the photo, there are patent numbers cast into the base plate.
I don't remember ever seeing these before.

Anybody here seen these before?

I copied the photo to keep for future reference as it will disappear after the auction closes. I'll have to dig out my '66 and check it for patent numbers.

My '66 does not have the patent numbers. One other thing I've noticed is that some Moseley's have the embossed area painted black while others do not. Mine with out patent numbers has the area painted black.

To the best of my knowledge, all Moseley plates made from '66 on have the patent numbers. I've never seen a Moseley with the recessed portions painted black (like on the Vibramutes), but I have seen two distinct castings with one having the recessed areas darker (but not by paint).

I've got two instruments (1967 and later) with full Moseley trems showing patent numbers, but no black background.

Mine is definitely painted. Looks flat black, sorta like it's 'baked' on after many many years.

Now I'm wondering if the early Moseley's without the patent numbers would have carried on the Vibramute tradition of being painted black, then that process dropped as a cost savings?

Very interesting Danny. My '65-'66 Combo does not have the Patent Numbers on the Trem System although
the embossed area is painted a Flat Black. Mine has the 'Full Trem System' (like the Mark I & V) being it was
one of the early models. "The Process dropped as a cost savings?" VERY Possible :?
make the Mos' of it, choose the 'rite stuff.
