I would like to know the proper procedure for refinishing a mosrite body (at home). Also; do I have to take it down to the wood ?

If you are going to refinish in a sold color, no you do not have to take the finish down to wood. You first need to determine if the material you are going to spray over the old finish is compatible. For instance, if it has been finished in enamel then spraying lacquer over it will be like spraying on paint remover. In reverse, you can spray enamel over lacquer. Usually a factory finish will be lacquer, so you would be safe to spray either enamel of lacquer.

one thing I've noticed that many Mosrites have a thicker clear coat then other manufacturers.

it's kinda hard to know for sure if you need to take the guitar down to bare wood, but I will say usually that's the procedure for me. I need to know more of what you are working with, whats the condition of the finish, and what do you want refinish it with. i.e. a poly, urethane, or nitro finish? do you want a solid color, translucent color, metallic, or a burst? etc, etc.


just about everything I've learned about guitar refinishing, I've learned from reranch, it's an AWESOME web site. other then that the key to good finishing is tons of practice, and even more patience.

...and an occasional tip from Danny doesn't hurt either
