These are the items needed to boar and counter boar the tuner holes in a guitar heaad
1 pcs plywood 3/4" x 16" x 5"
1 mapel block 1 1/2" x 1" x 5"
3 dry wall screws
1 Philips screw driver
1 5/16" brad point bit
1 13/32 end mill (made from old 13/32" drill bit.
1 stop colar
1 scale
2 C clamps
1 pcs of tape
Cut a dado in the maple block, 9/16" x 9/16" the full length of the block. Then drill 3 5/32" holes equally spaced for the drywall screws, and mount to the plywood creating a fixture for drilling and counter boaring tuner holes.

Fixture with guitar neck mounted, ready to be boared and counter boared.
Image
After laying out the locations for the tuners on the back of the head, mount it on the fixture, making sure that the top of the head is in the dado all the way back and in the corect position.
Image
Attach the fixture to the drillpress with C clamps, lining up one of the marks for a tuner, centering the 5/16" brad point bit on the mark, drill the hole all the way through the head. ( drillpress speed is 870 R.P.M.
Image
DO NOT MOVE THE FIXTURE!!!! Remove the brad point bit and install the 13/23 end mill. BE CAREFUL NOT TO DRILL TO DEEP. When the correct depth is reached, install the stop colar on the end mill, and lock the depth stops on the drillpress in position for the next 5 holes. The stop colar insures that the end mill will be placed in the same exact position to acheave the same depth as the first hole.

The depth guage for the counter boar in the locked depth position, and the counter boar with the stop colar all the way against the dril chuck.

The green tape makes it easer to see the correct hole depth of the counter boar.

Losen the clamps and repeat steps 4 and 5, 5 more times and the counter boaring for the tuining pegs is complete

To make your end mill, select the size you require, cut off the end of a standard twist drill, grind it flat and square to the side, and grind a 25-30 degree relif angle on the back side of the flute, leaving a 1/32"-1'64" cutting edge. Works like a charm, and saves you $18.00. I find that if you make the boar and counter boar slightly over size, it compansates for the over spray during finishing. If the fit is to tight you can adjust with a little sand paper wraped around a drill bit and run it through the boar and counter boar.
The final pic is of the cutting edge sorry it's not real good but I think you will all get the idea presented hear. THIS HAS BEEN A MICKEY MOUSE ENGINERING/GOOFY PRESENTATION by DONALD DUCK.

Cool! The thing I do different is, I alway's drill the large holes go on the top side to accept the bushings. ;)

Also, did that headstock some how get reversed or am I just seeing cross eyed?

Neat idea of the jig to secure the headstock and the modified bore bit. Can't wait to see how the tuners get installed.

Hi Danny, the bushings are the nuts that screw into the tuners, and the tunners are pined in the back with a small screw. Naw, your seeing it right, its for a left hander, it's the graduation gift I'm working on. The same thing can be done from the front, just need two pices of plywood for clearence of the neck. Thanks for the compliment. Hope a few of the guy's try this makes the builds much easyer. :D

I forgot that there are other tuners than the vintage style Klusons.

I do that in a similar way, only I drill locator holes in the supportplate whom I tape to the headstock(doublesided carpet tape, can live without it). With a locator pin in my drillpress table Its a breeze. For the stepped holed i use a step drill like the st326:

Hi Danny, yeah, the klusons are the correct tuners to use, but when I had my fender jag, the bushings kept falling out wnen I changed strings, what a pain. So I decided to use the type that screwed into the tuner to solve that problem. Going to post some picks tonight on the other thred whear I'm attempting to build a mosrite you can check it out if you want.
