sorry Dub, my bad. I meant Johnny Ramone switched his klusons too to grovers on his ventures 2. I think it seems to help with the use of the tremolo, the 350 model i have I have left the original klusons tuners on there. non-tremolo guitar ;)
Cheers,

I'm just curious what folks consider a collectable guitar to be?

IMHO that depends on who is doing the collecting. Me, I like Mosrites. I don't even mind Fillmore Mosrites & Hallmark. Some people stop at vintage Mosrites. Some stop at Ventures. Some only collect Mosrites made in between January 1966 and May 1967. Some collect autographed, some stage played. What ever floats your boat.

One thing that is necessary for my collection is it has gotta be fun to play. I aint gonna get a guitar & just hang it on a wall & collect dust.

Hey, Sarah--

I will probably be slammed for this, but I think that, unless one is a Scott Chinery-type, with those kind of resources, the idea of a collectible guitar is a joke.

There are certainly rare guitars, fascinating guitars, historic guitars, popular guitars, and so on, but the term collectible strikes me as rather a con. The term implies that one has a series of something, like a series of San Francisco-mint buffalo nickels or something like that.

When I was working for Marvel Comics, I was in a store to see whether a certain book had hit the retailers yet. A woman was in there looking at a very expensive tin box of baseball cards that was on sale and she asked the young clerk, "Are these collectible?"

The clerk said, "Oh, yes, ma'am. See? It says 'collector's item' right on the package. In a year, it will be worth double what you pay for it today!"

Maybe so, but only if someone is willing to pay that for it.

I agree, for me I will not buy a guitar that I can't play. So, all of mine are players, including the ones I consider vintage. Of the ones that I have, I would say my 1961 Guild X-50 and 1966 Mosrite Celebrity are vintage.

Hey--

Good discussion, this. I think that I may have been thrown off by the term, "collectible." "Vintage" is certainly something to be respected in the world of guitars, and i much enjoy reading this forum and learning so much about vintage, and other, guitars.

I also find it fascinating to see folks recreating vintage guitars. Some of the work I have seen on this forum is absolutely stunning. And the restoration of a vintage guitar is very much a wonderful thing to see.

Finally, watching the various Mosrite "clones" surface and determining how closely they hew to the Semie-built originals is most enjoyable. I don't have the kind of bread to buy each and evaluate them, so I get a lot of satisfaction from reading what other folks have to say on the subject.

Maybe the coolest part about THIS forum, in particular, is hearing from folks who knew Semie and worked with him at various times. How cool is THAT?!?!?!?

Yes, this is a darned good forum and a very enlightening.

I guess "collecting" is subjective. My 3 yr old daughter collect sea shells. I collect 80's era skateboards as well as guitars. If someone has an interest in widgets & starts gathering those widgets out of love, that widget is collectible to that person. However, vintage widgets are way better.
