My Celebrity III has the Moseley "half" tremelo and it has the patent number and no black paint. I believe mine is 1965 or 1966

Now I'm wondering if the early Moseley's without the patent numbers would have carried on the Vibramute tradition of being painted black, then that process dropped as a cost savings?

Danny,
Just a follow up/and or update to this....Got the Book today! On page 100, there IS
a pic of a Moseley Trem System....it seems to be painted...Check it out on page 100 ;) ......

Yeah, but it also has the patent numbers. Mine (1966) is painted black but does not have patent numbers. Reading your earlier comment, yours are painted black and doesn't have the patent numbers either. Is that correct?

I see the '65 is not painted black and doesn't not appear to have patent numbers so I'm going to guess that early '66 was a transition version.

That one on page 100 is not painted, the contrast is within the casting itself. I'm not sure of the actual process, but it ain't paint.

handbrake, the pic above is surly painted, in my opinion. the "dirty" look of the other trem on ebay I think is just do to aging over time. you can soak chrome, nickel, or aluminum hardware in lemon oil or wd-40 for several days and the hardware will come out a slightly darker pewter-like color. Also there's solutions that can be used to age hardware, I use it on hardware for antiques on a somewhat regular bases in my shop.
muriatic acid also can be used to do this in specific cases (pretty much like relicing hardware) but be EXTREMELY careful this stuff, it can and will hurt you, if not kill you if handled carelessly.
Cheers,
Aaron
