Pickup Size vs P-90

Postby GuyaGuy » Fri Feb 21, 2014 4:18 pm

Hi all. New guy here...I've searched here and Googled my little fingers off but can't find this info.

What is the size of a Mosrite pickup?

According to this thread the rings are 10.1cm x 4.8cm.

But what about the actual pickup dimensions?

The reason I ask is that I have a lovely 12er copy with P-90s and I have not found pickups that I've been satisfied with. I'm considering getting M3 pickup. I'm sure I'd be happy with the P-90-sized ones, but I'd love to have the Mosrite-sized ones as long as it just requires minor modifications. Here's the 12er:

Oddly enough, I've got a Filmore / Mosrite Japan (via ebay) cover & ring as well as a p90 cover sitting right here at my desk. Assuming that the Japanese cover and ring are the same size as vintage units, I can tell you right away that the Mosie ring will cover the p90 route. You'd need to make the route a little "taller," and cut your pickguard to fit the ring, but at first glance, it will work. Gimmie a minute to pull some measurements here.

My p90 cover is 34.83mm x 85.46mm - so call it 35 x 85.5 to be safe.

The Mosrite cover I have measures 37.6mm x 75.94mm, so call it 37.75 x 76 to be safe.

The Mosrite ring measures 48.25mm x. 99.85mm, so the measurements in the thread you mentioned are pretty close to what I've got.

Nice looking axes, BTW.

This should illustrate the size differences pretty well.

Excellent. Thank you, BlackieO!

Looks like I'll mostly need to cut the guard and make the routes 2.6mm taller. That seems doable.

I had to cut the guard already to add the vibrato. I didn't do the best job so I might cut it for the pickups and then draw it based on the modifications to get a custom guard built.

FYI (and as a PSA):

I gave up this idea. I figured out that the string spacing on Mosrites is fair bit narrower than on a P-90. I guess I'll go ahead with the original plan of getting the M3 P-90-shaped Mosrite pickups.
