Replacing a fret, with another fret Celebrity MK3

Postby JoeWP » Mon Jul 12, 2010 8:41 pm

Hello all,

Haven't posted here in awhile, but I've got a question. I've got a bad fret on my board, it's the 6th fret. I've seen before that you can replace a fret, with another fret further up the board. This is something I'm thinking of doing, since at this time I can't quite afford the $300 it would cost for a re-fret (and because the frets are in beautiful shape)

The question is, what kind of frets are these? And how are they gripped in there? And, is this something I should do?

Thanks,
Joe

No! Fret work is not trial and error on guitar you care anything about. It's best to leave it to someone with the proper tools and experience. That's not to say you should not learn how to do it yourself. Just get some old junker project guitar off eBay, do a search on line 'how to refret a guitar' and practice until you are confident you have gained the skill required for the project of refretting.

I'd take it to a professional, personally. ;)

Joe,

if you feel comfortable adjusting the truss rod, you may want to tweak it a little to see if it helps as a temporary solution until you can get the frets looked at.
Cheers,
