Thanks everybody for all the info!!! My logical guess would have been that parts were swapped out on all the inconsistent guitars I've seen (trems without rollers, and vice versa), but it sounds like many mysterious pairings were in fact factory stock. What a fascinating and sometimes frustrating line of instruments...
I'm convinced the Mosrite roller bridge is the most comfortable electric guitar bridge I've ever come across...the Gretsch bar and the Bigsby bridge tie for second IMHO..the Bigsby may have the edge for palm muting but that's up to how well any particular Bigsby bridge has been slotted and filed.

you said it! another reason I love mosrites. they stay in tune better then any gibson or fender, and the mosrite bridge is the greatest bridge ever invented for palm muting.
