Out of the blue, I received a Carvin catalog in the mail last week. I was reading through it and discovered that one of their models had the neck tenion extended up under the neck pick-up. Since I had seen this as a typical Mosrite feature, I was wondering if Semie got this idea back during his involvement with Carvin, or if the recent Carvin is copying the current Mosrite construction.
I'm not a builder and claim no historical knowledge of guitar construction. I just saw this and wondered.

Re: Neck joint construction: Mosrite vs Carvin ?
On all guitars where the higher frets meet the body rather than inset into the body, then it is necessary to make a tongue on the neck to reach for enough into the body to secure it. This will be found under the neck pickup. Look at a Fender Stratocaster and a Mosrite Mark 1, you will see what I'm referring to. I'm sure Semie was doing this design long before Carvin as the old Carvins were made like Fender until the 1970's.

Semie actually learned this from Paul Barth. It was used on Rickenbackers and Barth guitars before Semie used this method. There's a thread I wrote a long time ago about this.
The 1950's Carvins are not made this way....so if they did it later, they were probably just copying Gibson Les Pauls or some other well known guitar that used this method.

Don--
It was certainly a reasonable assumption to think that Carvin and Mosrite shared construction details in their guitar making; after all, Semie used Carvin pickups, knobs, etc. on his early Mosrites. Semie and the Keisel family who ran Carvin most certainly knew each other.
