Guitar with MDF body.

Postby KRamone27 » Sat Oct 31, 2009 6:37 pm

I'm building a guitar for my son for X-mas and the inspiration came from a you tube video I saw where the guy made a Johnny Ramone tribute guitar from cheap parts and an MDF (medium density fiberboard) body and to be honest it sounded pretty good on the video. Has anyone heard of a guitar made from MDF? About the build, I'm working on a budget of $100.00 and not a penny more and I think I can do it as I spent $25.00 on the MDF and maple for the neck and the neck is just about done and I started today.

Isn't MDF a lot like Masonite? Danelectros have been made with Masonite for many years, not solid pieces though.

I've only built one guitar so far, but I do work with MDF and hardwood every day at work.. it should be fine as long as the neck and body are attached realy well (which I'm sure you plan on doing)and I wouldn't be surprised if there were more MDF guitars out there some where.Heck I might have to just do one my self!!!
Please post some pictures!!

Gibson has experimented with particle board bodies for a number of years, starting with the Kalamazoo line in the '60s.

And a lot of guitars that are coming out of China now are basically MDF with a veneer front and back for looks.

Not a lot of progress as I've been busy with other projects. But the body is ready to cut and the neck is just about complete. I had some extra MDF so I made a couple of jigs, first is a fret slot cutting jig and second is a truss rod routing jig.
