DDoS attack

Postby MWaldorf » Wed Mar 14, 2012 5:07 pm

In case you didn't notice, the site was offline for several hours today. The host was hit with a DDoS attack, but appears to have things restored. Fun, huh?

I noticed it too and whenever that happens I always think it's undergoing an update or something. Good job getting it back online, Mel :)

Great job, Mel.

I'm a network administrator (my "day" and sometimes night life) and can appreciate the efforts required to identify, repair and remediate intrusions, viruses, etc.

It's the "little" things that often go unappreciated.
I appreciate your efforts in keeping the site available for all of us.

Just a dumb question probably, but aren't there programs out there that can be installed to protect the server? I use AVG, and so far, it's blocked anything headed my way... As you probably now are fully aware, I'm no longer computer savvy...when they invented Windows, I was already out of the game and on to funner things...

It's up to company that hosts this forum application. If the ISP (Internet Service Provider) hosts this as well, they would control this. This kind of protection involves firewalls that should have alerts built-in or programmed to email or call those responsible for monitoring and maintenance.
It also depends on what level of service is in the contract (who pays for what).

I could go on, but I would really rather be playing in a Ventures/Surf band earning my daily bread with my Semie Mosrite, Jaguar and modified Yamaha Flying Samuri than working my day job. Another thread... :(

The DDoS attach wasn't against us - it was apparently against the entire datacenter. In this case there wasn't much for me to do besides watch for alerts from the host and ride it out with the rest of the gang.
