Well, I'm definitely on the wrong side of the generation gap to be familiar with skate rock, so I'll have to come down squarely on the side of surf music. Although I remember a song about skateboarding from the '60's called "Sidewalk Surfin'"--Jan & Dean, I think, although it sure sounded like the Beach Boys too, and I think it was written by Brian Wilson--with the vocal refrain "Bust your buns, bust your buns now..." but I always thought it was surf music!

I think your poll would have been better served if you would have given and option for other genres such as Country, Rock, Blues, Pop, etc . I had planned this as a later survey. If you look at our demographic survey you will see that the dominate age groups probably never heard of Skate Rock. I doubt that the majority would consider the Ventures as a surf band.

Being that I'm...ahem...over 50, I haven't a clue as to what is "Skate Rock". But I'm about to let google be my friend and find out.

"Okay, clear the floor. Couples only now." ---for some reason, I don't think it's this...

Skate Rock is a sub-genre of punk rock. The bands were made up of skate boarders, usually and sang about skater-related issues.

I was really just kiding with this survey. I know that, in a Mosrite forum, surf music would be much more popular & the 15% of us or so that are "punk rockers" would get the joke.

Back in the 80's there was always a kind of rivalry between the skaters & surfers. The surfers were more fasion oriented and a lot more laid back. The skaters were more punk & had skabs on teir elbos & knees. THey thought we were gross weirdos & we thought they were a bunch of wussies.

There is a clear distinction between the 80's era surfers and the 60's era fans of Ventures and similar music.

I'm with Strat-o-rama here. Never heard of it before now.
The Ventures themselves were the first to say they weren't a surf band.

Jayson, does Avril Lavigne's "Sk8ter Boy" fall into the category of Skate Rock? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbdb7rdcNdI
The song and rendition caught my attention (as well as Avril, ha) and it grew on me! But I must admit that in my heart I am still a "Surfer-dude", even if on dry land only...and I enjoy playing Nokie Edwards' composition "Spudnik" ...aka... "Surf Rider"! :D ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeH2asmkUOM)

Please don't mention Avril Lavigne when discussing Punk rock, surf music, or anything worth listening to for that matter! :D . Search "The Rubinoos Vs. Avril Lavigne" on you tube, she denies any similarity to the original song, very interesting. She's a poser if there ever was one.

I like some of the older skate punk stuff, love surf stuff. As far as I'm concerned, a good song is a good song regardless of style.
