Ventures Japan 1966 tour DVD

Postby dubtrub » Thu Jul 24, 2008 6:28 pm

I bought a cool (black and white) DVD off eBay that arrived today. It is the Venture's Japan tour 1966. This is the one you see a lot of excerpts on YouTube where they are playing the white Mosrites. It's not all playing though. The cameras followed the guy's around town and constantly had their cameras rolling. You can tell they sometimes get annoyed with the camera guy's. The eBay seller claimed he brought the video back from Japan and dubbed it onto DVD. It's actually a very clear and good copy. Everything is in Japanese, even the discussions with the band is all over dubbed in Japanese. Still it's a great video. Anyone else have this video or have seen it?

The movie is called "Beloved Invaders" The concert footage also appears on the recent Japanese DVD/CD set "The Ventures GO" along with the late sixties videos discussed here and some 80s stuff.

Yeah, I saw it about 35 years on Leaser Disk but did not want to pay $80 for it at that time. Finally got a DVD copied version on eBay at much cheaper price. The Ventures website sells that DVD too but at very high price.

There is a section in the Ventures book about this video, Beloved Invaders. It was filmed as a Japanese documentary Silent Film. All the music and Japanese dialog was added later. I thought the music was just a bad recording, but the music was added later also. Obviously they didn't have the precision equipment of today's standards and a lot of the playing is out of sync.

What I find interesting is, they are playing their blonde piggy back amps. The Ventures book says they first used their amps but had difficulties at higher volumes. The problem was the line voltage in Japan was 100 volts instead of the US rating of 115v. This is when Guyatone came to the rescue and provided amps for the rest of the tour (which also had their problems). However the video only shows them playing their piggy back Fender's.

Still a good flick.
