A step back in time

Postby dubtrub » Mon Jul 06, 2009 1:13 pm

I finally got around to scanning some old photo's of the band playing at the Santa Maria Vet's Hall in 1962. That's me with the white Stratocaster and the brown Vibrolux amp. I still have the guitar but it is no longer white. It was long ago refinished three different times, although it is now restored to Fender's original three tone sunburst color. I just couldn't make myself go back to white. At any rate I thought some of you might get a kick out seeing this old timer from back in the '60s.

This was our first gig after winning third place out of seven groups competing in the Battle Of the Bands where we won our band attire as a prize. First place prize was won by the Sorenson Brothers and they went to Capital records for a recording session. Second place was the The Sentinals, and we all know what happened to them. Also shortly after this we acquired a bass player and a keyboard or organ player. I went into the Army about 10 months later and the band broke up.

I've never seen any of the band since I left for the Army. I have tried over the years but all contact is lost. Regarding the set list. That took some serious thought to try and remember, but I'm pretty sure we played five songs, Harlem Nocturne, Honky Tonk, Peppermint Twist and Tequila. There was another song with sax harmony, I think it was called 'All Nite Long' but that just may have been the vocal parts interjected periodically. I'll eventually recall it's title as I can hear it in my head as I type this.

Very Cool!!! I just sold one of my old Strats. A 1963 in Sunburst, it was as worn as SRV's #1 and very close to his serial # I paid a grand for it in 1989. My wife got really ticked at me for giving a thousand bucks for an old Guitar that we really couldn't afford. She wasn't complaining after it brought 12 times that on ebay!!!!!! I still have a 63 Fiesta Red that I'm hanging on to. http://www.myspace.com/thethunderheads

Man, I sure wish I still had that amp. I do still have the piggy back '65 Bandmaster that I traded the amp in for, but I rarely get it out of the closet. Way too many amps.

NICE DANNY!
Man, 1962...those were the days when Rock 'n Roll was still fresh and the air filled with excitement around it (to me, a boy of 18). It was the previous year that I saw Cliff Richard and The Shadows perform at the Colosseum Theatre in Johannesburg in the original line-up (!) ...and the world wasn't the same again afterwards.

I had decided to definitely become a famous star (LOL) on the guitar too. I never reached stardom but I can at least play a couple of tunes and I'm still learning and enjoying, heh heh.
It was also the year that I definitely became hooked to the Ventures after hearing them play "Driving Guitars" when it was first aired on the radio. After they had switched to playing Mosrites, I was knocked out by the Mosrite sound but didn't realise yet that Semie's creation was responsible for it (in combination with the boys' combined talents of course).

Yeah, the seed had been planted for the need...for a MOSRITE!
