Joe Maphis double neck Mosrite
Before the Ventures, here's the guy that put Mosrite on the map. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJtyEhP3AOM That double neck guitar that he's playing is now on display here in Bakersfield CA. at the Kern County Museum.

Tommy,
Where is the photo in the attachment from, is it the KC Museum? It appears to be the same guitar that is in the YouTube video. As for as I know Joe Maphis only used the one double neck guitar.
When I was a kid, Semie had at tiny shop across the street from my school. Everyday after school I'd make a bee-line for his shop and spend a couple of hours watching him work on guitars. One time he had Joe Maphis double neck there and had just changed the necks from the earlier style similar to the Fender-Bigsby, all tuners on one side, to the 'futuristic' Mosrite shaped headstock. Since I was drooling over it, Semie allowed me to play it for a few moments. Funny how little memories like that creep back into my mind. Sad part is, the older I get, the more those memories fade.

I got that from the surf guitar 101 forum.Yeah thats the same original doubleneck . I believe Semie changed the necks twice , first he changed them from the tuners on one side to the large early Mosrite style with inlay ,then the necks were changed again in about 62-63 to the necks that are on it now with the Ventures style headstocks. The pickguards were changed from black to white and the pickups were also changed , and a vibramute with the long arm replaced the originals homemade style bridge and vibrato.

That's VERY INTERESTING. But the only suspicious thing to me are the Grover Tuners. Even back then, I believe that Semie only used Klusons until around 70-71. ???

Re: Joe Maphis double neck Mosrite
In late 50s and early 60s photos of Joe Maphis you can clearly see that he has gold plated Grover "Stairstep" Imperials on both necks of his doubleneck, and it looks like that's what he had on that big hollowbody (which I suspect started out as a Gibson with a broken neck) with the Mosrite neck that he played before he got the doubleneck.
Note the Carvin pickups!

Zak, to the best of my knowledge, I think that's exactly what happened....
