Re: The Ventures.......or not
Well, if they start replacing the members by adding new ones, they could always call themselves 'the AdVentures.

make the Mos' of it, choose the 'rite stuff.

Re: The Ventures.......or not
When a band has been around for 50 years members will come and go. The classic line up is not original line up. Much like the "is a Mosrite if Semi didn't make it" debate.Everything is in a state of change at all times.
As Veenture pointed out, there has always been a revolving door of members. But it when comes down to it the Ventures are Bob and Don, sure we love Nokie, Gerry etc. but Bob and Don are the core. If Don quits playing live then the Ventures are dead. A line up with Gerry Nokie Bob S. and Leon could they get away with being the Ventures? ...sure,... would they?... no.
I hope the Don keeps going for the 60th year of the Ventures.

Ok, as far as Hawaii 5-0, when the Ventures appeared on American Bandstand and played that song, the lead was Jerry and he was playing a Les Paul Standard. I'm not saying that Jerry recorded it, but he did perform it on TV. That show was also the first that I noticed the Mosrites were gone.
As far as the Ventures in general, I have to agree with Dubtrub. What I am hearing is little more than a cover band. But I'm a hard-core Nokie fan anyway.

Don being the businessman he is will probably sell the rights to the name to the other guys and they will keep the Ventures name for the draw and $$. Really all the studio track from even the 60's were not done by the band. Its the music not the individuals you come to a concert to hear. So get over it there will probably be a Ventures for our Great grandkids to hear in concert.

Re: The Ventures.......or not
Boy, that's a can of worms--at what point does a band stop being itself and becomes a tribute band with (maybe) a tenuous connection to the original band? The Who without Moon and Entwistle isn't the classic lineup, but at least they've still got the primary songwriting members. Hmmm--the Beatles are down to a drummer and a bass player (yes, I know McCartney's a guitar player and keyboard player too)--the Who are down to a guitar player and a lead singer--maybe they should get together and form a band called the Whotles! The Rolling Stones have been through several guitar players and a couple of bass players, but their songwriting team is still intact, and they still sound like the Stones. In the case of Journey, they were a primarily instrumental fusion band when they first formed--Steve Perry came along a bit later.
At one point in the mid-'70's, a band I was in opened for the Ink Spots for a couple of weeks. This particular group of Ink Spots (there were four or five groups of Ink Spots touring the country at that time) was led by a guy named Stanley Morgan, who had replaced the original Ink Spots' guitar player in 1929. None of the vocalists had been in the original group--in fact, one of them had been in the Platters, who came along a lot later than the Ink Spots, although I don't think he was an original Platter either. Stanley was a great guitar player--played Freddie Green-style chord rhythm on a Gibson J-200, and the vocals were (pardon the pun) spot-on. Perhaps that will happen with the Ventures--there'll be Leon Taylor's Ventures, Bob Spaulding's Ventures--I don't see how it can be the Ventures without Don Wilson and Bob Bogle, but hopefully it'll keep the tradition alive. The Duke Ellington Orchestra kept going long after Duke's passing, and even after his son Mercer died--I think there's still a Duke Ellington Orchestra.
