Growing up Catholic and being dragged to church, I was force fed the most God awful music imaginable. Once I was allowed to ride my bike there, I pretty much quit going altogether, the music hasn't gotten any more uplifting, judging by the funerals attended recently.

This music makes me WANT to go to church, these guys almost sound like they're not white guys at all! The only thing missing is snake handling and speaking in tongues.

I really like Semies playing, especially the end of Sweet By and By, he's really hitting the high notes there. It made me think of an interview where he said his hero was Les Paul, he loved the high notes he was able to hit and could not figure out how he got them. Which is why he built an octave neck guitar, according to the interview, " that ocatve neck did the trick".

I wonder if he ever knew Les used speeded up tapes and other tricks to hit those high notes ;)

Possibly not. I think that's why he made the "octave neck" for his Doubleneck Model in the 50s.
But hopefully, someone here will correct me if I'm wrong, I just need to know the correct info.... .

That's Classic Gospel Organ with Guitar in the Southern Tradition. The Church I grew up in and still attend has had the same Hammond Organ since 1966. The Guitarist that taught me my first chords still plays every service, he plays the old Mel Bay chord per beat style. It is almost as forgotten as the style Semie is using on these recordings. A real treat for me to hear these Classic Tracks. Thanks Deke. :)

That was wild..........now the "Question of the Day"..........
Was Uncle Semie on the the 1st three or four frets of the
Octave neck, or was he 'up there' on the 6 string neck? ;)

Another amazing trip into the Time Machine!

Thank you! What did his triple look like and what were the necks?

That's some great stuff! Coming up Jewish in the big city (San Francisco), the religious music I heard as a kid was nothing like that. At our synagogue, we had a classically-trained organist, a choir, and a cantor. Majestic, powerful, definitely--and the ancient chant melodies still sound to me like Middle Eastern blues--but it didn't ROCK! Although I can remember singing "Every Time I Feel the Spirit" at summer camp...If we'd had rockin' stuff like that at temple, I'd have been there early every Friday night! Actually, I think I'm still the only person (that I'm aware of) to play electric guitar on the pulpit at Temple Emanu-El, and that, probably, only because I was the rabbi's son. And Dad didn't really approve...it was six or seven acoustic guitarists, a few singers and me on electric--it was the first time I ever tried to sight-read a melody line. We did some Israeli folk song--"Tzena Tzena" or something like that. The Southern gospel traditional sound, black and white, like what Semie and the Reverend are doing on that record, woud have been more up my alley!
