I have been self teaching myself west coast style swing, and it's a gateway to jazz. There is a couple of lessons with Charlie Baty on you tube where he demos and talks about using scales, and very inportantly, arpeggio runs. Also, he gets into those "inbetween chords' that give a basic I-IV-V progression a jazzy flair.
Also, I've gleaned some good tips from Jake Herzog's column in Guitar Player magazine. Its a series on jazz basics for rock and rollers.
Also in GP, there were some articles within the last year on Pat Martino methods of jazz improv and chord melody. It's deep but everyone who has studied it claims it opens doors.
