Well, you're a step ahead of me that these were ever a part of your musical vocabulary! I thought Ionian and Dorian were architectural styles from ancient Greece. I guess I've got my columns and scales all mixed up :D

Thanks for the link, Danny. I will also make use of it.
I have been self teaching myself west coast style swing, and it's a gateway to jazz. There is a couple of lessons with Charlie Baty on you tube where he demos and talks about using scales, and very inportantly, arpeggio runs. Also, he gets into those "inbetween chords' that give a basic I-IV-V progression a jazzy flair.
Also, I've gleaned some good tips from Jake Herzog's column in Guitar Player magazine. Its a series on jazz basics for rock and rollers.
Also in GP, there were some articles within the last year on Pat Martino methods of jazz improv and chord melody. It's deep but everyone who has studied it claims it opens doors.

I once pulled a muscle in my brain trying to understand jazz ... it's like chess for the guitar - too much thinking

OK, Mel, here's a nice jazzy YouTube lesson for you to learn for the next time you come down for a jam. We'll leave out the Darth Vader part though.
