By definition all recording is lossy. You just prefer one loss over another.

One of my albums given away was the first ever LP of the Shadows, which must be worth a small fortune by now (rare South African release, "Rocking Guitars"). During the seventies I ended up owning high grade audio equipment but there was always loss when making transfers. Sadly, almost all of my tapes had been seriously degraded over the years and I sold my Braun tape deck, along with all my reels of tape too, this year.
The joy of a digital back-up copy is that the quality of the transferred information can be (and usually is) one on one.
