By definition all recording is lossy. You just prefer one loss over another.
Adam is right. Through the years I have taped many a friend's records onto magnetic tape -even some of my own LP's and then giving them away afterwards! -how dumb was that, thinking of saving space?!
One of my albums given away was the first ever LP of the Shadows, which must be worth a small fortune by now (rare South African release, "Rocking Guitars"). During the seventies I ended up owning high grade audio equipment but there was always loss when making transfers. Sadly, almost all of my tapes had been seriously degraded over the years and I sold my Braun tape deck, along with all my reels of tape too, this year.
The joy of a digital back-up copy is that the quality of the transferred information can be (and usually is) one on one.

The label that put out my band's first "record" folded so when we did the 2nd one we made sure it was on vinyl. There's just something about it, even if it's just having a larger picture of the cover and liner notes that are easier to read. Also, just picked up a ton of good country records down in VA this week in including Joe Maphis. I already have most of that stuff but for 3 bucks I had to have the record just for a good shot of the Mosrite double neck.
