Gibson LG-0 w/ old DeArmond pup.

Postby ElTwang » Wed Dec 31, 2008 5:51 am

I'm thinking about trading a guitar for this:

Anyone knows anything about the pup? Is it a 50s design? How does it sound?

I'm not going to use this guitar for slide as many blusey players do but more for finger- and flatpicking with alternate tunings.
I know that the LG-0 was the budget line guitar back then and they seem to differ a lot from each other. Anyone has one?

Not sure just what that pickup is but my wife plays a 1935 Gibson arch-top with a DeArmond pickup. I believe it to be from the early 50's or maybe the late 40's. This was her fathers guitar that he bought used in 1945 and he put the pickup on it. It sounds great and has a nice mellow tone to it on that guitar

Not sure if you can see it that well but it does look different that the one you had a link to.

Hi Jim,

Nice guitars! No, I can't really see it. Is it a single-coil? It doesn't look like a sound hole pup.

EITwang,

It is not a sound hole pickup. If you look close you can see a bracket just behind the bridge. It clamps to the strings and has a rod that runs along the tops side and the pickup slides both front and back on it so you can place it to your liking. We made a special bracket so the cord plugs in at the rear opening of the F hole. I have never opened the pickup up so I am not sure if it is a single or humbucking. It is quite though. It is also very well sealed inside the metal housing top and bottom.

Lars,

That pickup is a DeArmond single coil with a buit in volume control and they were made during the '50s and '60s. I have a 1961 Carvin catalog and it shows that pickup listed at $27.50. They were specifically designed for round hole guitars and were the hot setup in their day for amplifying acoustic guitars. You can see it here.

The pickup at the upper right is what is on my wife's guitar. Great page there Danny, thanks.

Doing a little research I came upon a couple of good photo's of a DeArmond 'add on' pickup. You can see the brackets that clamp it onto the round sound hole. As I recall the cord just ran out the sound hole and fell across the top of the guitar.

Cheers Danny, those are great pics. I really like the look and design of this pup. I generally can't stand the sound of piezo pups and always hear a world of difference between a soundhole pup and piezo designs. A SH pup sounds more real and 'natural' to me.
