Zappa Baby Snakes SG

Postby paulramon1962 » Fri Nov 02, 2012 12:14 pm

I have to say, Frank Zappa is one of my favorite guitarists. Though he is known best for songs about Yellow Snow and Catholic Girls, when you get right down to it, he's one of the most prolific guitarists and composers of all time. It was much to my surprise when I heard that Gibson was planning a "Roxy SG" copy, but when I saw it, I was unimpressed.

I suppose it is an accurate presentation of the "Roxy SG", as you see in the pic below:

But for me, I wish Gibson ran the Baby Snakes SG as his signature. I did find a company in Europe that happens to make a replica, and a pretty nice one too. I had to share these pics, just to see if there are any other Zappa aficionados on this forum:

A photo that describes the switches, albeit in broken English:

And finally, one of the virtuoso himself:

Sorry for being pic heavy, but what's a thread without pics?!?
Does it justify the $4500 price tag? For me, sure. Then again, I don't have the money haha

Maybe so, but tonal control is almost ultimate!

Mac, please forgive my British humour, I just couldn't resist (after looking at Frank's hairstyle).
Although I'm a Dutchman, I did get an old British Colonial edumacation... .... :)
Those guitars are truly impressive!

Too bad they couldn't include at least one button or switch to run a dental floss dispenser, should one find oneself moving to Montana soon... :)

Not much of a Zappa fan, but it doesn't look like Gibson took much time for detail, the color looks way too dark, no embellishments on the body as far as pinstryping or the dark patches. I do seem to remember Frank was on one of the Monkees episodes dressed as Mike, and Mike dressed as Frank...plus his cameo in the Monkees movie "Head". I did buy a white with gold hardware Epiphone SG, like the one Mike used on tour. The Gibson version was out of my price range at over 3,000 bucks!

If you look close ,the detail to the wood grain is just about dead on. I think the color diff is because of lighting.I love SG's. If I had the extra cash I would go for it! Also, if you want knobs like Frank had, you can get them at Radio Shack.
