Sad Tale with a Happy Ending

Postby olrocknroller » Tue Jun 26, 2012 11:09 pm

Some of you may remember the Hagstrom with the broken neck... Well, the project is complete now, and the patient survived. The guitar now has a bolt-on neck, rather than the original set neck, which proved to be quite a challenge for me since I've never built a bolt-on neck from scratch. After a few adjustments to get the neck-body angle correct though, the guitar set-up nicely, and plays very smoothly, with at least as much, if not more sustain than it had with the mahogany neck. My concerns over removing the set neck proved simpler than anticipated, aided by a hot knife, and my trusty milling machine to clean up the neck pocket. The final neck pocket was larger than a commercially availabel replacement neck by ever-so-small an amount, so I opted for the "from scratch" option with the original fretboard.

...and here it is with the replacement neck:

Looks like it turned out great. How does it compare to the shape and feel of the original neck?

Thanks. I took great pains to duplicate the profile and dimensions of the original neck, so feel is almost identical, except that this neck has a tung-oil finish rather than the original lacquer. I find that oil finishes are much superior when playing in hot and steamy venues...my sweaty hands don't stick!

The maple is a much brighter tone than the mahogany, and I think the sustain is better. This is actually a good test of woods, because the body is relatively unchanged from the original, and the electronics are identical. It was a fun project.
