"Zero-nut"

Postby olrocknroller » Wed Aug 17, 2011 12:04 pm

Here is the nut I have designed for a companion to the High-transfer bridge. I have never been happy with most nuts on guitars, tuning issues with tremolo's, poor open-string tone etc. I scratched my head, and came up with a way to replace Gibson-style nuts with a zero-fret and string guide combined in one unit, that screws right in place with no major mods to the guitar (two small screw holes). Strung it up today and am very :D with the results!

Semie Moseley did this on some of the Brass Rail guitars.

Ain't it the truth...the more new ideas we have the more we find that someone else was way ahead of us! :roll:

I recently converted an acoustic guitar I bought cheap, to a zero nut. I absolutely love it. It gives the acoustic much more volume, and has a slight metallic sound, NOT Metallica, Metallic.

Olrocknroller;

BTW, I think your design is better then the separate fret concept. It will even transfer better in my opinion.
Even more so if made from metal, I would prefer brass.

Just curious, why did you decide to screw it on rather then glue ?

I'm just a screwy kind of guy, I guess :roll: ...actually, I find that brass is quite "slippery", and wouldn't trust it to stay put if it got even a slight knock with the strings off. My country-pickin' buddy had real problems with nuts breaking loose because he bends a whole fist-ful of strings at once...I screwed it on, and the problem went away. It's my fastener of choice!

Yup. It is brass. My pictures obviously aren't showing it very well! :oops:

It did show very well that it was made from Brass, I just stated that I would also prefer brass over bone or anything else.
If you rough up the contact points on the backside and use Duco Cement, I don't think it will come off easily.
