Re: Taking a stab at finishing a Pearl drum set

I remember how years ago a friend of mine who played drums became obssessed with the notion of refinishing his beautiful Pearl kit. The only problem was that he had no idea how or the skills necessary for the job, but he ploughed on regardless and totally ruined it.
Thank goodness he didn't play guitar. I couldn't have stood by and watched that!

the one thing about finishing, almost in any case, you can redo a bad finish job. finishing is just like anything else, it takes a lot of practice to get good at it and know what you're doing. honestly, compared to furniture, I rarely finish a guitar. I pretty much gained all my skills working on antique and new tables, chairs, cedar chests, buffets, etc. finishing these drums were actually easier to compare to finishing maple furniture for me then say a guitar. finishing a guitar takes far more skill, patience and time. furniture you can get away with a really thin finish, in fact it's actually more desired because it allows you to feel the wood grain. if you were to do that on a guitar, most people would think you were a hack.
my business partner that taught me how to finish would go crazy because I would strip down a piece of furniture, sand it, wipe it down, stain it, and finish it all at one time, when realistically you probably should wait a day before jumping onto the next step. I even spray lacquer on top of wet stain, and you could say this is a bad approach, but then again, my results speak for themselves ;)

the friend I'm doing this drum set for I'd really like to see a maple snare to match it.
