Floyd Rose Tremolo on a Les Paul?? Need a Little help here..

Postby oipunkguy » Fri Jan 08, 2010 3:07 am

hey guys,

maybe you could help me out with this. I had a customer ask me if I could rout out a cavity on his les paul copy to make a floyd rose fit on it. I know I could do it, but he's also open to the idea trying a different tremolo, as long as it works for him. pretty much all he wants is to be able to do is drop the strings down to a whole step using the trem. so something like a bigsby probably wouldn't be the right choice.
my question is, do you guys have any ideas? is there any other tremolos you guys would recommend that wouldn't require so much routing?

ironically the first prototype floyd rose was put on a les paul deluxe, but it's really hard to find a good les paul floyd rose today, they have been discontinued for several years. these were the kind that attached to the original posts (i think) so very little mods were required. i have no idea how well they worked though.

thanks.
Cheers,
Aaron

I used to own a Les Paul that I had a double locking Floyd Rose affixed to...my guitar tech used a plate so he wouldn't have to route...I do believe they make these for this application..better than routing.

I know that 101volts was asking Bob Shade if a Stetsbar trem would fit on the sheena model I think it mounts in the same body inserts for the stop tail without any modification.

If you hear back, perhaps the Neal Schon signature Gibson model is worth aiming at? I missed out on a gold top Burny version of this not long ago - great guitar. Otherwise the Kahler trem takes less routing.

Yes, Stetsbar makes a vibrato that fits Les Pauls without modificiations. However, Their vibratos don't have much range. There's also the option of using a Bigsby with a Vibramate which won't require modifications.
