Metro Chicago was home to many, many garage bands, of course a few made it big, like Styx, as well as the zillions who did not.
Interesting you bring up the concept tho; 'have not seen / head a real garage band in years during the hot times, summers in the city.
Noise ordinances? Playing into mixer and out of headphones? Bigger houses with basements?
