Mosrite Duck Foot Bass Tuners!

Postby Massassauga » Tue May 31, 2011 12:08 am

Got a set pulled off a Joe Maphis '68 neck...listed on Craigslist so far to link here, gonna wait a bit before bothering with yr olde eBay.
They are in excellent condition, turn freely and hold tuning well. I'll include the bushings and mounting screws too.

Listed them at $275 on CL but would surely entertain offers from forum folk.

Thanks all!

Out of curiosity, was there anything wrong with the Maphis bass that lost its tuners?

Nothing wrong per se...it had a crummy rebinding job, was spraypainted blue and I had to have the dead and mangled pickups rebuilt when I bought it. The duckfeet made it rather neck divey too. They are as heavy as they are cool!

The Maphis body is now at the core of a project that is seeing it transformed into a guitar (thanks to an absolutely killer original 65 Vibramute Ventures Neck and some Bob Shade hardware...it plays soooo sweetly)...I'm in the process now of giving it a refin and a better rebinding job--unfortunately the previous job meant that a large rout was made to accommodate larger binding...since the damage is already done I'm going all out and doing it up with a multi-ply binding--think Teisco Spectrum 5 or Gretsch. Real eager to see how the top looks under all that paint!

The Original Neck and remainder of the Bass hardware were installed yesterday on a Ventures solidbody bass body courtesy (Curtis-ey?) of the fabled 90's "Canadian Mosrite Parts Stash" that I have been tweaking (the neck/pickup rout was sloppy and the edging and German carve only partially done). I was hoping that being a solidbody the bass would have enough weight to counteract the neck dive but no such luck...it might actually be worse than on the Maphis. Although hollow, the "top" of the maphis is insanely thick! Anyways, a set of ultralite Hipshots and it's sitting pretty.

Basically the only thing "wrong" is that now instead on one mutant Mosrites I have two!! .I'm not sweating ever converting things back (it was not exactly original condition to begin with) nor obviously am I worried about "originality" so I'd rather the tuners see a good home in the Mossrite community.

Wow - share some pics in the project section if you have a chance. Sounds like an interesting switcheroo.
